Ghana hosted the 3rd ISGF Africa Region Conference

Held on the theme: “Discovering the Potentials in Africa” the 3rd Africa Regional Conference took place in the city of Accra from 30 April – 5 May 2019. Participants from Africa National Scout and Guide Fellowships were present but also from Central Branch countries. They came from: Benin, Cape Verde, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. Outside the Africa Region there were participants from Libya, Netherlands, Portugal and altogether 59 participants.

Day 1: Arrival of the participants and registration.

Day 2: The programme was shifted as 1 May, Labour Day, is a free day in Ghana so this day became the excursion day.
First, we visited the Seseme Slave camp and after that we proceeded to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and memorial park located in downtown Accra, the capital of Ghana. It is dedicated to the prominent Ghanaian leader Kwame Nkrumah. The memorial complex was dedicated in 1992 and is situated on the site of the former British colonial polo grounds in Accra. A quick visit to the Art Centre to look or buy a souvenir from Ghana before we were heading to Laboma Beach Resort for a BBQ.

Day 3: The opening ceremony took place in the Presbyterian Women Center at Abokobi in Accra. Speeches were given by:
The Chief of Abokobi - Hon. Samuel Nii Adjetey Mohenu who urged the young scouts to continue instilling disciplines and moral values in the youth by creating more groups in their communities.

The Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Scout Association – Mr. Louis Okyere who commended participants for their commitment to the Fellowship and sense of discipline. The Boy Scouts of Ghana started in 1912.

U.S. Ambassador to Ghana – Stephanie S. Sullivan had many memories when she was a Girl Scout and for this occasion and learned “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold. She was proud wearing her uniform to school and she showed several pins on her clothing related to Girl Scouting. She wears het mothers Girl Scout scarf. Her father and nephew were Eagle scouts.

Chairman of the Ghana Scout and Guide Fellowship - Mr. Prosper Bani cited loyalty, trustworthiness, friendliness, kindness, obedience and courtesy as some of the characteristics of a scout, saying with these attributes of young people in any society, the world would be a better place.

Vice-chairman of WOSM - Ms Jemina Nartey from Ghana. It is a privilege and a joy to join this Conference and to see so many enthusiastic participants.

Chief Commissioner of Ghana Girl Guide Association - Mrs Zakiya Abdul-Wahab. The Girl Guides gain important skills so in Ghana we keep the Flame burning. Africa is the world of tomorrow.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports – Mr. Perry Okudzeto told the audience that government believes that educated youth is a powerful weapon in reducing poverty. He then announced the conference open.

After the official speeches flags from the participating countries were brought to the stage by young Scouts and Guides. In the afternoon the Constitution was discussed, and recommendations were made.

Day 4: Some NSGFs showed their way of working and their ongoing projects. Also, the ISGF presentation was on the screen and the Twinning presentation. Many Twinning cards were distributed, and a lot of new friends were made.

Day 5: Final discussion about the constitution and recommendations. Candidates to the Africa Region introduced themselves and final voting took place.

There was only one candidate to host the 4th ISGF Africa Region Conference in 2022 and that was Senegal as Benin withdrew their bid at the last moment.
Conference was closed and there was a special dinner in the conference hall and some of the participants were dressed in their national costume.
