World Environment Day celebrated by NSGF India

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June. This day is celebrated and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations. In 2023 World Environment Day was focused as a reminder on people’s actions concerning plastic pollution matters. The steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action.
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, after it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) at the helm, the day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach. Tens of millions of people participate online and through in-person activities, events and actions around the world.

The NSGF of India celebrated this day one day earlier with a virtual campfire. The state branches, district units and guilds of NSGF India adopted several activities year round to create awareness on saving the environment and nourishing nature by planting trees, cleaning rivers and beaches and avoid plastic in their national gatherings. They also are holding seminars and workshops on various subjects of protecting the environment to young Scouts and guides in schools and community gatherings.

The virtual campfire was attended by more than 100 members and some members from outside India. Moreover more than 20 state branches from all regions of the country showed their activities through dances, poems and drawings. They cleaned the environment from plastic and planted trees. It was a virtual competition to surpass each other by excellent presentations on avoid use of plastics and promote greenery.
