NSGF UK – Queen’s Jubilee Commonwealth Project
To celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee (70 years) as the monarch of the UK and her role as Head of the Commonwealth, Scout and Guide Fellowship (SAGF) UK has worked with Fellowship members from our sister Commonwealth countries Ghana, Kenya, New Zealand, Cyprus & Uganda to create the Commonwealth Together Challenge.
With 7 sections, there are suggestions for activities to learn more about the amazing range of countries and cultures that make up the Commonwealth. Covering: Creating Together and Eating Together; National celebrations; the achievements of inspirational heroes; landmarks and special places; and Playing Together the games that local Scouts and Guides enjoy, there are a wealth of challenges for adults and young people to try.
The 7th section is about what Scouts and Guides do best - Working Together. Kenya shared their Grannies Craft enterprise project, Cyprus planted trees following hill fires, Uganda & UK are working together on a Rabbit project. Each person or group is encouraged to find their own Challenge to make a difference locally or internationally.
Some Scouting and Guiding groups in the UK have taken up the Challenge - some groups are running Community gardens, others are planting trees for the Queens Green Canopy, and the Shropshire Trefoil Guilds enjoyed the Challenge for their County summer event.
The Trefoil Guild event was planned and organised by Muriel who is the SAGF UK Chair and Committee member of NSGF, so is an example of the Fellowship working together with one of the national Scouting/Guiding organisations to promote International Fellowship through using the Challenge.
Individuals or groups can contribute to the SAGF UK project for the Working Together section - funds raised through selling the Challenge Badges will go to help Scouting and Guiding in Tonga, another of the Commonwealth family of countries. The downloadable Challenge and the Commonwealth Together badges are available from:
While we originally set out to use the Challenge as a celebration of Her Late Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, we will be continuing to encourage people to take up the Challenge as a tribute to her memory and her many years of service as Head of the Commonwealth.
