The International Day of Elderly is observed on October 1 each year. On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
On the occasion of this day the Maldives Scout and Guide Fellowship visited Himmafushi Island to celebrate that day with Older Persons of that island. They organized a special evening and entertained the Older Persons with various activities and fun games.
The day is also marked to put focus on the world's responsibilities towards older people to make their lives happier.
